AP Dining Chair

$1,680

The AP Dining Chair was designed by Aditya Prakash, a late Indian modernist architect who worked at the Chandigarh Capital Office alongside Pierre Jeanneret and others designing furniture for the Chandigarh project in the 1950s.  It is a chair design studied and re-editioned as a tribute to the late Indian modernist architect's forays into furniture making. Phantom Hands has developed two earlier designs in collaboration with his son and eminent architectural historian Vikamaditya Prakash, upgrading them structurally and materially, but carefully holding onto their aesthetic legacy. The final result is furniture that is both historically rooted and staunchly contemporary.

Much of architect Aditya Prakash’s furniture reflects the French modernist elements of Chandigarh. However, his interests included various other schools of modernism and furniture styles.  The AP Dining Chair is a nice example of this, as it is characterized by its bentwood backrest and rounded tapering legs, reflecting the architect's fascination with Nordic Design. Its robust construction, clean lines and woven cane seat also mirror design of classic 20th Century Scandinavian examples.
